Outsourcing Strategic and Significant Projects
Is there a project that hasn't been started, or started but not completed, because there isn't the time .... or the inclination? If this is the case then take a look at the possible reasons. Reasons may be workload, lack of desire to do the project, lack of skills and experience to do the project, or doing the project may create more work and hassle. However if the project contributes to delivering the business plan or strategy it's like to be a source of revenue and contribution to profits so there's a cost to procrastinating.
What To Focus On
Being able to deliver is heavily influenced on what you like doing and what you are good at. If you and your team:
-
Pursue what you love - always work to your strengths and passion. Do you know what your strengths are? Do you have the skills, passion and application to handle the project? If the buck stops with you it doesn’t mean that you actually have to do all the projects.
-
Spend 80% of your time doing what you are best at. Do you know what you are best at - after all most of us are very good at underestimating our own ability
-
Ask yourself whether you are the best person to do this? Review your workload in light of what you love and what you are best at and ask yourself – ‘Am I the best person to do this?’ ie are you the only one with the skills and experience to handle the project. If you aren’t then the most effective solution is to delegate or outsource.
you will be in the best position to delivery.
Looking at the above may reveal why projects haven't been started or are unfinished. If they impact on delivering your strategy then making excuses will prevent the business from reaching it's goals. If you don’t have appropriately skilled or experienced resources within the organization to handle the project then there are two main options for outsourcing:
-
A company or consultant specializing in the market sector/skill you require
-
An interim manage
